2018 Kairos Prison Ministry Appeal

Beloved in the Lord at CTS-HS Parish,
A few weeks ago Fr. Steven referred to a passage by an Orthodox Theologian who said that if we are going to be truly and fully human, we have to step out of our comfort zone. And this past Sunday, Father again reminded us that we need to get out of our comfort zones if we are serious about growing in the faith.
I am very thankful to be part of a parish in which a lot of folks have taken such steps and are taking some risks to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked and to provide housing for people who have nowhere to stay. I am also grateful for the support of so many to the prison ministry through cookies, prayer, kitchen team and financial gifts. You are making a real difference, even if you haven't yet seen it first hand. Again, Thanks!
I am certain that there are some of our brothers and sisters who feel an urge to go into prison, but are not sure if they can do it.
If God is nudging you toward prison ministry, be of good courage. You may not have all it takes, but if you will take that step - a big one - then you can rest assured God will provide you with all things needed. If you think God wants you to enter the enemy's stronghold on a weekend, contact Wayne Krueger, Andrew Herbst, Peter Carter or or me. We will answer any questions, and walk with you on the journey and get you connected with the right people at whichever prison you are called to
I also know there are several - men and women - who very much want to go and visit Christ on the inside, but at this time have situations that make it impossible to commit to four days of team building plus four days inside the prison. For all who are in that position, we have good news. You can apply as a volunteer, take a two hour security training session at the facility where you wish to serve, and then begin coming to participate in Prayer & Share and in reunions. You would initially be assigned a mentor (experienced team member) till you are fully comfortable. Under this program, you can come as often as your situation allows. If this sounds like just the thing for you, contact one of us to get the paperwork started. And ladies, never fear. While we men can only serve in men's facilities, we have contacts with volunteers at the women's prisons who will gladly help get you started
One special note: Chillicothe is a long distance for most of us to travel. But there is a very special blessing for those who serve there. Ohio's Death Row is located there, and our team serves both the general population, and the men on Death Row on alternating weekends. Serving there will take you waaay out of the comfort zone, but the blessings are awesome!
Finally, if you would like to "come and see" as we Orthodox say, you can come to the closing on Sunday evening of a weekend. You will see and hear the residents and feel the Holy Spirit moving. If you would like to come to the closing at Warren, see me or Andrew to get you on the entry list. If you are interested in going to Chillicothe, speak with Wayne Krueger or Peter Carter. Or if your interest is in the women's facilities at either Dayton or Marysville, any of us can get you connected with the right person at that camp. And one final thing: Closing services are open to both men and women, so you can attend with your spouse.
