Brothers and Sisters, Christ is Risen! Several of our people will be involved in the Kairos weekend at the Warren Correctional Institution on May 13-16, either inside the prison or in the kitchen. But we need the help of all who are willing to lift us up in prayer. We all know how important prayer is. But for the men inside the prison it is doubly powerful. Not only are they blessed by the prayers themselves, but simply knowing that people on the outside care enough to pray for them can have life changing power. On my first weekend we announced that the children at the Hogar were praying for the men, and at least three men were moved to tears. We would like to offer you the opportunity to pray for us, and to let the men know about it. If you wish to participate in this ministry, you can go to: http://www.3dayol.org/Vigil/GetVigil.phtml?pvid=4451&commid=1551and select a time during which you will promise to pray. You do not have to go anywhere in particular. Just pray before your icons as usual. If you sign up for a time slot, you will receive an e-mail to confirm the commitment. One of our team members usually signs up for time slots in the middle of the night. When people ask him why, he says, "If it doesn't cost me much, it's probably not worth much." Thank you for your prayers and all your other support. Terry Morgan ><((((((°>

From Fr. Steven ~We will officially begin our Nativity Charity Appeal for 2009 this coming Sunday in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. And we seek his intercessory prayers for a successful completion to our project. Our goal is to be able to financially sponsor a "little girl" at the Hogar in Guatemala City for one year ($3,600). As you have probably noticed, I am using the term "little girl" in referring to her. Madre Ines has requested that I do not share her name, at least at this point in time. It is a sensitive case, as this little girl is the victim of sexual abuse. Perhaps this allows her a touch of "privacy" after that has so violently been taken away from her. To make it a bit more personal, however, I do have this (updated) note that she wrote when she first appeared at the Hogar: "My name is _____. I don't know when is my birthday, but I am ten years old. I am in second grade, and I like to study and swim. I need to be sponsored. Thank you very much for your love and support." We will have a basket by the Cross or you can turn your donation in to Mickey Callender.

Original post from Fr. Steven, Nov 23, 2009:Dear Parish Faithful, The forty-day Nativity Fast began last Sunday, November 15. This is the Season of preparation for the Lord's Nativity on December 25 through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. My purpose here is to propose a parish-wide or parish family project that would allow us to fulfill the Lord's command to practice charity/almsgiving. When I returned from Guatemala, I immediately wrote a meditation in which I shared the hard and troubling truth that a little girl that we met in June had been sexually violated previous to her entrance into the Hogar. The Hogar has a program that allows for sponsorship of individual children. This is of tremendous benefit to the Hogar because it provides essential financial support for its strained budget. And it allows for others to participate in the Christian ministry to these "abandoned, abused, and orphaned children." The Hogar encourages parish sponsorship of a given child, since individual sponsorship can prove to be financially challenging; and because it is a communal project that brings a parish together through a common purpose. Greetings Brothers and Sisters In Christ As you may be aware, the St. Katherine’s Society has brought back the Cookie & Baklava Bake Sale. Many of you may have had the opportunity to sample the infamous Greek Butter Cookies during our Albanian Heritage Dinner. Orders are still being taken for these wonderful Balkan and Slavic treats handmade by the members of the St. Katherine’s Society. All proceeds from the sale will be used for the various charities and church related programs supported by St. Katherine’s Society. In the years past, this sale has been quite successful and we look forward to the same this year. However, it is not possible without the support of the parish community. Here is how you can help the Church Sisterhood in our efforts: Order cookies and baklava for you, your family and friends – they make wonderful gifts for teachers, co-workers, etc.** Share the order form with those you know (neighbors, co-workers, friends, social organizations.)** Donate your time to help with the baking and clean up. We will be baking on Saturday November 14, 2009.* You may also make a donation to help with the cost of the supplies. *If you can donate your time or if you have questions, please feel free to contact us at any time. ** Order form posted in MS Word and PDF file formats. You can email them to the contact information below or bring them with you to Church. Orders are due Sunday, November 1, 2009. If we are able, we will send a notice out to extend the order taking deadline. Thank you for your support and thoughtful consideration to this initiative. From Fr. Steven:Last Sunday evening, Presvytera Deborah and I were invited to the Warren Correctional Institute by Terry Morgan and Dan Georgescu, to attend a graduation ceremony for the Kairos Weekend Program, also known as a short course in "Practical Christian Living." This was an intense course that lasted from Thursday - Sunday on the grounds of the WCI. Many prisoners may know of Christian teaching, but this program is meant to assist them in taking a much deeper look at the Gospel, to embrace Christ and to seek the forgiveness and grace of God. We heard from some of those who did so at the graduation ceremony on Sunday evening. Articulate or inarticulate, their personal witnesses were all moving. We also heard a good solid talk by the prison warden, Wanda Jackson. While there, we noticed at least one of our posters prepared by our Church School students. This one had recognizable Orthodox crosses and the Jesus Prayer written on it. Terry's role through the weekend was that of "table clergy," and Dan was a "table servant." Nicholas Georgescu volunteered to be a cook and his contribution was greatly appreciated. Also with us were Bernice Morgan and Cristiana Georgescu. Just this briefest of encounters with the atmosphere of the WCI impressed upon us the great challenges and difficulties of a prison ministry. We deeply appreciate the efforts of both Terry and Dan in taking on this most difficult of ministries as they represent authentic Orthodox Christianity and our parish at the WCI. May God continue to bless their ongoing work. Let us all keep them in our prayers. Coincidentally, if you go to www.scoba.us you will find an encyclical statement from the Standing Conference of Orthodox Bishops in America (SCOBA) on Prison Ministry Awareness Sunday, designated for this coming Sunday, May 24. These developing, expanding and essential ministries to prisoners (MATT. 25:31-46) and to "abandoned, abused and orphaned children" [via our mission efforts for the Hogar Rafael Ayau orphanage] (DEUT. 24:17, 21; JM. 1:27) are a deeply encouraging sign of spiritual maturity within the parish. It is the application of Gospel principles to real-life situations and needs. I hope our parish circle of participants will continue to grow. And may the Lord continue to bless and strengthen our endeavors. ~ Fr. Steven
